Ultimately, I do not really recommend this. That means there is no problem putting it on the great crossbow, which has much higher damage, and you don’t even need Exotic Weapon Proficiency. This trick gets better, though, if you take advantage of another property of aptitude-it allows you to always use the weapon proficiently. So aptitude lets your heavier crossbow still work with Hand Crossbow Focus, which always provides free-action reloading.
Reloading light crossbow 5e free#
Aptitude allows a weapon to benefit from feats for other weapons, and Hand Crossbow Focus allows you to reload a hand crossbow as a free action while also working like Weapon Focus. That is an aptitude heavy crossbow with Hand Crossbow Focus ( aptitude is a +1 special property from Tome of Battle, Hand Crossbow Focus is a feat from Drow of the Underdark). Snappie’s answer covers all the reasonable answers I’m aware of, but there is a cheesy combo that works RAW. (Unlike quick loading, self-loading explicitly says the combination works.) Combine this with the feat Rapid Reload so that the wielder can make iterative attacks.
Reloading light crossbow 5e full#
Talk to the DM about using the weapon special ability quick loading in conjunction with the feat Rapid Reload ( Player's Handbook 99) to allow reloading as a free action so full attacks can be made with a heavy crossbow.Ī self-loading crossbow ( Arms and Equipment Guide 116) (12,350 gp 8 lbs.) is a +1 heavy crossbow that can be reloaded by taking a move action. There is also the magic weapon special ability quick loading ( Magic Item Compendium 41-2) (+1 bonus 0 lbs.) that allows storing 100 bolts in a crossbow and reloading a heavy crossbow as a move action (or, if you want, a light crossbow as a free action). You could use a repeating heavy crossbow which allows the wielder to make 5 attacks before reloading, but then reloading it is a full round action.Īlternatively, the 1st-level Sor/Wiz spell ghostly reload ( Races of the Dragon 113) reloads the weapon for you but has limitations: it's 1 reload/caster level, maximum 10. If you can do that, you can full attack with the heavy crossbow Thematically, I'd have the town guard and militia (and the like) use them because like you said, they are simple weapons for simple folk. The trick is reducing reloading to a free action. The changes I propose (along with rules already present in the PHB and the CKG) would bring it back in line, I feel, with a bow. My feeling on this, Rock, is that the weapon had to be balanced for mechanics and price. Also, remember that crossbows grant no damage bonus for high strength (PHB pg. 256-257 of the CKG) that allows for the bow to be fired at a higher rate, at the expense of accuracy (ie. Heavy crossbow - reload (w/o clasp), reload (w/ clasp) & fire, or reload (w/ clasp) & move (I would not allow reload/fire/move in the same round, clasp or not)įinally, I'd probably use the rules (also on pg.

Light crossbow - move, reload, and fire (all three) Further, I'd rule the following actions possible in a round with the weapons:

I know that's an optional source, and there's nothing in the PHB to verify it, but this is definitely what I'd go with. If the crossbowman possess the necessary clasp and handle on their belt, they can increase the rate of fire of the heavy crossbow to 1 bolt per round. CKG, page 257 wrote:However, the crossbow can only be fired once a round for the light crossbow and once every two rounds for the heavy crossbow.
